Kirsten Poehling-Monaghan, MD

Kirsten Poehling-Monaghan, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine, knee, and shoulder surgery, as well as general orthopedics and fracture care.

She served as an Assistant Team Physician for the Philadelphia Eagles professional football team, the Philadelphia Phillies professional baseball team, and the Philadelphia Flyers professional hockey team, as well as the Villanova University Wildcats and the St Joe’s University Hawks and is currently the official Team Surgeon for a number of high schools throughout Montgomery, Charles, and Prince George’s counties.

Dr. Monaghan completed her Fellowship training in Sports Medicine at The Rothman Institute of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Prior to this, she completed her orthopedic residency training at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

During her medical training at the George Washington University School of Medicine she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society. As an undergraduate at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, she graduated with high honors and was awarded the Walter J. Hume research fellowship award.

Dr. Monaghan specializes in sports injuries of the shoulder, knee, and ankle, as well as injuries unique to the female athlete, including patellar instability and ACL tears.

A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, she enjoys tennis, snowboarding, and spending time with her family, including her two young sons.
